MIN function in Google Sheet

In this lesson we will learn how MIN function works in Google Sheet. The MIN function in Google Sheet is used to find the minimum value from a set of numbers.

MIN(num1, num2,..)
  • num1 : This can be a numeric value or a reference of a cell containing numeric value or a range of cells containing numeric values.
  • num2 : This is optional. This can also be a numeric value or a reference of a cell containing numeric value or a range of cells containing numeric values.

Let’s understand with some simple examples. First we have added the below formula in cell A1 and as you can see, from the set of numbers provided the MIN function returns the minimum value which is 9.038 here.

=MIN(45,152.86,560,9.038,9687.11,8102)

Now we will see how the MIN function works with cell references. In column A we have cells containing integer, decimal numbers & text values and also empty cell is present there. Now we have added the below formula in cell C1.

=MIN(A1,A2,A3,A4,A5,A6,A7,A8,A9)

Here as you can see the MIN function finds the minimum number which is 9.038 from the cell references provided and the point to note is, it ignores the text and blank values.

With the same dataset we can also see the MIN function works with cell range as well. We have just changed the formula in cell C1 as follows and the result remains same.

=MIN(A1:A9)

The MIN function also works with multiple cell ranges as arguments. Like in the below example we have added two cell ranges A1:A9 & B1:B10 as arguments in MIN function in cell C1. In both ranges there are numbers, blanks, text, special characters and alphanumeric values. The MIN function finds the minimum number among them which is 7.028 here.

=MIN(A1:A9,B1:B10)
