In this lesson we will learn how the ROW function works in Excel. The ROW Function is used to get the row number of a cell reference. Like ROW(F4) will return 4 as the referred cell F4 is in the 4th row of the excel spreadsheet.
- reference – [optional] A reference to a cell or range of cells. If this argument is omitted, the ROW function then returns the row number of the cell in which the formula resides.
Let’s understand with a simple example as follows. Here we have added the below ROW function in cell E1.
It returned the row number as 2 which is the top most row in the specified range of cells(B2:D5).
In below example we used ROW function in cell E3 without any argument. So it returned the row number of the current cell which is 3.
