PROPER function in Google Sheet

PROPER function in excel takes a string as the input and returns a string where the first letter of all the words has been capitalized and all the remaining characters are in lower case in both Excel & Google Sheet.

=PROPER(text)
  • text – This is the string in which you want to capitalize the first letter of each word.

Below is the example of PROPER function applied on the strings in cell A2, A3 & A4 to capitalize the first letter & converts the following characters to lower case in each word into the cell B2, B3 & B4 respectively.

Note:

  1. The PROPER function capitalize the first character of every word in a string. It also converts the rest of the characters in each word in lower case.
  2. Numbers, special characters & punctuations are not changed by the PROPER function.
  3. If you use a null character (or refer to an empty cell), it will return a null character.
