In this lesson we will learn how the PROPER function works in Excel. PROPER function takes a string as the input and returns a string where the first letter of all the words has been capitalized and all the remaining characters are in lower case. In a simple sentence, PROPER function converts the text string into proper case.
- text – This is the string in which you want to capitalize the first letter of each word.
Let’s understand with a simple example. Below we have a table containing text strings in column A. We have added PROPER function in column B to convert the text strings in cells A2, A3 & A4 to proper case in the respective cells B2, B3 & B4.
- The PROPER function capitalize the first character of every word in a string. It also converts the rest of the characters in each word in lower case.
- Numbers, special characters & punctuations are not changed by the PROPER function.
- If you use a null character (or refer to an empty cell), it will return a null character.
