In this lesson we will learn how to subtract in Excel with a simple example. Let’s say we have two numbers in cell A1 and B1 as follows.
In cell C1 we will subtract the data in B1 from A1. To do that we have added the below formula in cell C1.
After entering the formula you need to press enter key to get the result.
Now let’s do some more subtraction between each cell in column A and the respective cell in column B.
To do that first select the very first cell containing the formula which is here cell C1. Now place your mouse pointer to the down right corner of that cell and you will see the cursor will convert to plus(+) as follows.
Now drag the cursor till the cell you need to copy the formula. Here we have dragged the cursor till cell C5.
As you can see below each cell in column C contains the subtract of the corresponding cells of column B from column A.
In cell C2 and C5 we can see the result of the subtract is negative as in those cases B2 and B5 contains higher value than A2 and A5 respectively.
We can subtract small number from bigger number and vice versa in excel and also we can subtract any kind of number like two integers, two decimal numbers, one integer and one decimal numbers and so on as follows.
In case of decimal numbers you can increase or decrease the decimal digits you want to display from the options available in Number section of Excel toolbar.
At the end of this lesson we will also see the use of another formula to subtract more than one numbers from a single number with the below example. Here we are subtracting cell B1,C1 & D1 from the sum of cells A1 & A2. The formula we have used in cell D1 is as follows.
