How to Lock rows or columns in Google sheet

How to lock column in Google Sheet

In this lesson we will learn how to lock a column or a number of columns from left in a google sheet. In the below example we have a table containing different phases to build an office along with the start date and the duration of each phase in first three columns from left and also the daily expense for each phase from fourth column onwards.

Now here we would like to lock the first three columns so that upon scrolling to left or right only the columns starting from fourth from left will be scrolled.

To do that please follow the below steps.

  1. Click column C that is the third column since we are going to lock till the third column from left.
  2. Then in View Menu navigate to ‘Freeze’ and then click the option ‘Up to Current Column’. The Current Column is shown as column C as we have already selected the third column. This way you can lock up to any number of columns from left. Otherwise there are direct options to lock the first column and first two columns from left.

3. Now if you scroll right or left you will find the first three columns have been locked and only the columns after that are being scrolled as follows.

4. Now if you need to unlock the columns then again go to ‘Freeze’ under ‘View’ menu of the google sheet and select ‘No Columns’.

5. This will remove the lock from all columns and as you can see below, now all columns are being scrolled to left or right.

How to Freeze row in Google sheet

Now with the same example we will learn how to freeze a row or a number of rows from top in a Google Sheet.

In our table we would like to lock the first row so that upon scrolling to up & down only from the top second row will be scrolled.

To do that please follow the below steps.

  1. Click the first row since we are going to lock only one row from the top.
  2. Then in View Menu navigate to ‘Freeze’ and then click the option ‘Up to Current Row’. The Current row is shown as Row 1  as we have already selected the first row. This way you can lock up to any number of rows from top. Otherwise there are direct options to lock the first row and first two rows from top.

3. Now if you scroll up or down you will find the first row has been locked and only the rows after that are being scrolled as follows.

4. Now if you need to unlock the rows then again go to ‘Freeze’ under ‘View’ menu of the google sheet and select ‘No Rows’.

5. This will remove the lock from all rows and as you can see below, now all rows are being scrolled to up & down.

6. You can also lock any number of rows and columns together. By simply following the steps for freezing rows and columns as demonstrated above. Like below we have locked the first row from top and three columns from left in our table and now when we scroll left and right or up and down, the locked rows and columns are not being scrolled as follows.
