How to create Scatter Plot/Graph/Chart in Excel

Let’s say we have the below table showing the number of death vs the count of newborn for different types of animals in a reserve forest for an year.

Here we will create a scatter chart to see the correlation between the number of death and newborn for different species of animal population since both are numeric variables. Now to create the scatter Chart based on the above dataset in Excel please follow the below steps.

  1. Select the 2 columns you want as X & Y axis in the chart. Here we have selected B1:C8
  2. Click the insert tab in menu bar
  3. In the Chart group, click the ‘Insert Scatter(X,Y) or Bubble Chart’ icon

4. Now Select the chart style as ‘Scatter’ under Scatter

5. Below is how your scatter chart looks like. You can edit the title of the chart as we did as ‘Wildlife Scatter Chart’. Now click on anywhere of the chart. A ‘+’ symbol will appear adjacent to the chart containing the list of chart elements you can include/exclude as per your need.

6. Other than the default selected chart elements we have checked the ‘Axis Titles’  & ‘Data Labels’. This is how the newborn count which is the Y axis are displayed as data label in our Scatter Chart. You need to rename the horizontal & vertical axis titles like we edited the X-axis as ‘Death’ and Y-axis as ‘Newborn’ in our scatter chart.

7. There are some more variations of chart styles are available under ‘Scatter’ as ‘Scatter with Smooth Lines and Markers’.

8. There are some more variations of chart styles are available under ‘Scatter’ as ‘Scatter with Smooth Lines’.

9. There are some more variations of chart styles are available under ‘Scatter’ as ‘Scatter with Straight Lines and Markers’.
