How to create Pareto Chart in Excel

Let’s say we have the below dataset in the table. It contains the number of new bird species observed in a reserve forest each year from 2010 to 2020.

Now to create the Pareto Chart  based on the above table please follow the below steps.

  1. Select the entire table(A1:B12)
  2. Click the insert tab in menu bar
  3. In the Chart group, click the ‘Insert Statistic Chart’ icon

4. Select the chart style as ‘Pareto’ Under Histogram.

5. The chart will look like below. The X-axis which is the horizontal axis shows the Year and the Y-axis which is the vertical axis shows the number of new bird species observed. You can edit the Chart Title on top of the chart as we edited the chart title as “Pareto Chart”.

Pareto Chart is based on the 80/20 rule (also known as the  Pareto principle), which is a commonly used concept in project management. This Pareto chart highlights the maximum number of bird species(almost 80%) has been observed in the first three years shown in this chart (2011,2010,2015). So the ecologists need to focus more on these three years to find out the environmental parameters which insisted more bird species to come.

Note :
  • We must NOT provide any column header for the leftmost column of the table which we need to display as X-axis in the Pareto Chart.
